How to Choose the Right Nail Training Academy: 6 Questions to Ask Before You Enrol

Choosing a nail training course can feel super overwhelming. A quick search throws up dozens of options, all promising to turn you into a qualified nail technician, but the price, length, and content can vary wildly, and it's not always obvious what you're actually paying for until you're already enrolled.

Before you hand over any money, here are the questions worth asking every academy you're considering - including us!

1. Is the course accredited, and by whom?

This is the single most important question, and the one most often glossed over. "Certified" and "accredited" are not the same thing. Any course can hand you a certificate without it meaning anything to an insurer or employer.

Ask specifically: which accrediting body, and is it recognised by insurance providers?ABT (Associated Beauty Therapists) accreditation, for example, is widely recognised meaning your qualification is genuinely insurable and respected, not just a nice looking certificate.

2. What's actually included in the course content?

A decent course should cover at least the following:

  • Application and safe removal.

  • Hygiene

  • Anatomy

  • Contra-indications and contra-actions

  • The science behind gel

  • Health & safety

  • Client consultations

3. How small are the class sizes?

A nail technician course is a hands on skill and it's far harder to learn properly in a class of 20 than a class of 4. Ask directly about average class size and educator-to-student ratio. All of our in person courses are 1:1 so that we can solely focus on you and your progress.

4. How long is the course?

One of the most common questions we hear is whether it's better to choose a short, intensive nail course or a longer programme. The truth is that there isn't a one size fits all all answer. This one ultimately boils down to personal preference, some may prefer to learn over a long period of time whereas others may prefer to get it done and qualify quickly.

Before enrolling, think about your own learning style, your schedule, and how much time you can realistically dedicate to practising your new skills. Choosing a course that works for your lifestyle will give you the best chance of enjoying your training and building confidence every step of the way.

5. How do you assess that I’m ready?

Many places do this differently. Some will allow you to qualify on the day and some will ask for case studies. At Gratia we will always require case studies to ensure our students are fully up to scratch, confident and thriving before working on clients.

6. What support do I get after I qualify?

Qualifying is the start, not the finish line. Ask what happens after qualifying. Is the educator able to offer ongoing support should you have any further questions?

A few red flags worth watching for

  • No clear answer on who accredits the course

  • Vague or missing hygiene/health and safety content

  • No support or contact after you've qualified

  • Reviews that feel generic or can't be verified

Why we built Gratia around these exact answers

When I set up Gratia Nail Academy, these were the gaps I kept hearing about and also what I personally experienced. That's why we're ABT accredited, keep our class sizes individual and stay in touch with our students long after they've trained with us.

If you're comparing academies right now, we'd genuinely encourage you to ask every one of these questions - ours included!
